More Good News

I don't know where to begin exactly, so I'll begin by saying I have a high prolactin count. I've known for a very long time and for reasons that would take forever to explain, I haven't been able to do anything about it until now. Actually, it wasn't until 6 months ago that I was alerted that I needed to do anything about it but I didn't have the money.

For those of you that don't know, high prolactin most often is an indicator that there could be a tumor in/on the pituitary gland which is located just below the base of the brain directly behind the nose and right between the eyes. Other causes could be thyroid related, I believe.

So, about a week or so ago, I went to an Endocrinologist and had blood work done for my thyroid, then I went to St. Lukes and had an MRI done. It's really cool because they gave me a CD of my images with a viewer included. So I got to see the images before my doctor did. I reviewed them and reviewed them and couldn't find anything.

I heard from my doctor and apparently they didn't find anything either. So, good news is, no tumor. And my blood work came back ok. So what's causing the high prolactin?

Don't know. Doctor is working on it.

I didn't know what I was looking for exactly. So I googled a few things and looked up MRI images that had pituitary adenomas (sp) etc. Nothing seemed to compare to mine. The viewer even let me measure what I was looking at. I found my pituitary and measured it. It didn't seem to be very enlarged at all. So.... we'll see.

I was going to write about it but I didn't know what to say exactly. I wasn't that worried about it just frustrated that the initial doctor I had 5 years ago gave me the impression I didn't have to do anything about this. Even leading me to believe it wasn't that important if I continued my periods. I would like to punch him in the face right now.

I'm fairly certain that they checked my thyroid. They started me on a medication called Dostinex. I go in in about 4 weeks for a blood test to see if it's working.

I hope it's not my kidney.

If you have a baby and produce milk the prolactin levels drop...but you probably already know that...

Maybe the high prolactin is normal for you. Every year when I get my physical one set of lab values comes back abnormally high. Every year I get sent for further lab work and an ultrasound. Every year those studies come back normal. I've decided that the "abnormally" high level is normal for me.
